"Recent research shows that more single men manage to reach the EU to pursue international protection than women and children. Women and girls escaping conflicts encounter many forms of gender-based violence whilst traveling towards a host country. It is important to engage in a gender-specific analysis of this issue. The wording of the alternative resolution on ‘the situation of women refugees and asylum seekers in the EU’ would ensure adequate protection for female refugees. Whilst working on a dignified and reasonable migration policy it must be recognised that women should benefit from specific aid when they apply for asylum. Refugee centres must be adjusted to respect the privacy of women. Pregnant women in particular should have easy access to adequate medical care. Fighting against human smugglers must be a main priority. It is recognised that some female refugees are sexually abused as payment for illegal smuggling services. The European institutions and Member States are called upon to take immediate action against human trafficking."@en1
