"Madam President, I am proud that the European Parliament is speaking up for one of the most vulnerable groups in our society, female refugees, and I congratulate my colleague Mary Honeyball, who has steered this report through Parliament. Girl and women refugees arriving on European shores now outnumber men and, as if having to flee the horrors of war was not bad enough, they have additional risk and hardships to face just because they are women: sexual abuse, violence and discrimination. The measures needed to protect these mothers, daughters and sisters are clear: asylum procedures that take their vulnerability into account, better cooperation between EU Member States to tackle human traffickers, and organising reception facilities in a way that allows women to sleep and shower separately. I am shocked by some on the Right who have attempted to thwart action to protect these women on account of events elsewhere."@en1
