"Julie Girling on behalf of the UK delegation. The UK delegation firmly supports the principle of gender mainstreaming, recognising and subsequently welcoming its potential to equalise the current disparities between genders. Within the European Parliament itself, changes can and should be made and so we welcome those paragraphs that call for more women in senior positions, help women to juggle work-life balance, highlight the need for better training on LGBTIQ issues and encourage EU policymaking that is more mindful of a gender perspective. However, while being supportive of efforts to ensure greater equality, there are a number of elements of this report that the UK delegation cannot support. Rather than focusing on tangible results, this report is more concerned with bolstering the FEMM committee’s position within the European Parliament. Instead of using this opportunity to implement a more long-term and meaningful strategy to help and support women, this report seeks to instil gender budgeting which poses the risk of diverting funds from other, much needed activity. As a result of this, the UK delegation abstained overall, for this report."@en1
