"Gender mainstreaming can be used as a tool in achieving gender equality. It allows for the integration of a gender perspective into preparation, function, implementation and evaluation of policies with the goal of promoting equality between genders and avoiding discrimination. All EU policies, both internal and external, should be created to benefit males and females equally. The representation of females in key decision-making positions both at political and administrative levels are low, even within the Parliament’s political groups. When women do chair committees they tend to be less connected to economic decision-making. The Parliament must make sure that the decision making process is shared evenly amongst genders to ensure equality. Gender mainstreaming first necessitates the integration of a gender perspective to the content of policies. It also engages with the issue of representation of women and men in a particular policy area. This ensures that the needs of all citizens, regardless of gender, are met."@en1
