"Madam President, Happy International Women’s Day to you and to all the other women here. It is good that we have had an opportunity to vote on so many reports today and debate women’s issues, and I think that it is important for us to address gender mainstreaming. But, given that it is 2016, it is, to my mind, high time that we dealt with this and put the issue to bed. The reason that this has not happened is that the Member States have been quite slow to implement many of our recommendations. When we look at the gender pay gap, the figures in the UK show that we still have something like a 9.4% pay gap and over the course of their working lives women are likely to earn GBP 300 000 less than their male counterparts. We need greater action if we are to make progress that enables women to fulfil their potential. I am particularly concerned at the lack of female representation in science and engineering and especially, as I have witnessed myself, in the ever-growing IT sector."@en1
