"Madam President, whilst my West Midlands constituency is the only landlocked one in the UK, it is, however, a hotbed of manufacturing which relies on ports to export our wares. This is the third time the Commission has attempted to modernise port services and, I am afraid, it has still not got it right. My reservations about the latest proposals are that they fail to recognise the diversity of the port sector in the EU and they have equally failed to mitigate the environmental impact of ports. However, my concerns are focused primarily on employment rights and in particular the right to strike and the legal challenges which trade unions might face. I believe that this draft instrument is a blunt instrument, with the potential for the social elements being watered down still further during the trilogue process. For this reason, like my other Labour colleagues, I voted against this report."@en1
