"I supported this important report, linking child nutrition with health and wellbeing. It highlights the positive contribution of the EU and the CAP to development of healthy eating habits among children and promotion of sustainable local agricultural products. This is particularly important in the run-up to the EU membership referendum. The current schemes benefit nearly 30 million children per year across the EU and their funding has been increased to EUR 150 million a year (2014-2020). I would like to emphasise the link between proper nutrition and readiness to learn, and educational achievement. I come from a family of teachers and I myself have worked in early-years education, with children from the most deprived urban and rural communities in the UK. I know first-hand the listlessness and attention-deficit that accompanies child hunger. The shameful removal of free school milk from British primary schools in 1971 by the Conservatives earned Margaret Thatcher the eternal nickname of ‘Thatcher the Snatcher’. She proved that Member State governments do not always have the best interests of the child at heart. So thank goodness for progressive and compassionate politicians here working for the greater good of future generations in Europe."@en1
