"Action must be taken on the declining consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables and milk products amongst children. Childhood obesity is increasing due to the consumption of food with high sugar, salt and fat levels. It is necessary to ensure healthy eating habits within educational establishments, along with promoting the consumption of local products. The financial stability of this scheme must be protected by ensuring Member States cannot unilaterally cut the budget or alter the criteria for the allocation of EU funds. Healthy eating standards can be promoted by educating children on local food, eating habits and organic farming, along with the challenges of food waste. The scheme must give priority to under-consumed fresh and local products to ensure maximum benefit to participants. The scheme will exclude foods with artificial flavours and added sweeteners, any foods with limited amounts of added sugar, salt and fat will receive funding as an exception pending the approval of national health authorities."@en1
