"Madam President, I supported this report on animal health as it represents a progressive step forward in European law and policy-making. On a personal and political level, I am strongly in favour of reforms that promote further protection of animals. It is an issue that resonates strongly with my constituents in the West Midlands, who want greater action at European level; in particular, they want to see humane treatment of stray animals, and there should be a clear strategy for how we address this.
It is also important that we highlight the preventative action plan in this report, especially on transmissible animal diseases, which is a consideration in maintaining animal health across the board. In this respect, I welcome that the Commission is fully committed to defending animal health in the EU and to improving it with the help of Member States. All in all, it is a positive report that moves in the right direction."@en1
