"Madam President, in our European Union we are relatively well off and relatively prosperous. Those refugees who feel that they have to leave their countries, their homes and often their loved ones to escape war and suffering are not in the privileged position that we are, and no one leaves home unless they really have to. We know, and we have heard during this debate, that women refugees have very special requirements which many of the speakers have pointed out. I would urge you all, therefore, to vote against the EPP resolution, which significantly waters down what my resolution says about women refugees and their special needs. The EPP resolution waters down family reunification, which is an essential human right, aid for pregnant women, support for those women who have suffered violence, and childcare facilities, amongst other things. As has been said, women’s rights are universal rights. The European Union has a long history of supporting women, and we must continue that. So please, therefore, support our report in the vote today."@en1
