"Madam President, my one minute speech this evening is about the security of gas supply and I must compliment Commissioners Šefčovič and Arias Cañete on their proposals in this regard. They are very practical and sensible. We need to diversify supply and, of course, with the outcome of COP21 the need for renewables is more and more necessary. But renewables need backup and the ideal backup is gas. Now, with the development of LNG right across the water, particularly in the US, Australia and the Middle East, the proposals by the Commission are very sensible – to build LNG terminals across Europe. One of those is in my own constituency, Shannon LNG, which would be a wonderful hub locally, and of course would help to utilise particularly gas coming from the US because we would be the closest port to it, to transport it off into Europe. I would hope that we will see this happening and particularly to get the PCIs developed across Europe. That is the key for now."@en1
