"Madam President, coming from the island of Ireland, ports are obviously very important to us, and thankfully we have some fine ports both in Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland. Post COP21, the role of the maritime sector, shipping and ports are going to be very important in helping us to meet our targets regarding emissions, and particularly the development of the motorways of the seas. For that reason, it is important that ports are functioning properly and that there be transparency, intra-port competition, and that the rights of workers, etc., be protected. But we also need to develop the core network corridor, especially for ports like Shannon Foynes in my own constituency, which is one of the deepest ports in Europe – and with the Panama Canal now doubling its capacity, deep ports are going to be required. By the extension of the network corridor, this would be a huge asset both to Shannon Foynes and, indeed, to Europe generally, and I think that is something we should consider."@en1
