"Madam President, I am very grateful to Ms Zimmer for suggesting this because I think it is indeed essential that we take very seriously violations of human rights in our own continent and I believe that is exactly what is happening in the Calais camp. I visited there myself quite recently and I was really shocked to see the way the British and French Governments were not taking seriously the needs of the asylum seekers who were there.
We believe very strongly that the British Government should be registering refugees in that camp and should not be relying on the fact that Britain is outside Schengen and that they cannot reach Britain to register. We believe a lot of the refugees there actually have rights to come and be reunited with their families in Britain under the Dublin Agreement and my government is simply not taking those rights seriously.
I believe that the destruction of their homes is actually a violation of their right to shelter under the UN Convention on Human Rights and I think it is very essential that as a parliament we take seriously these violations of human rights within our own continent, so I entirely support the proposal that we should debate this as one of the urgencies."@en1
