"Madam President, under Rule 152(1) I am requesting that the EU—PNR Directive, which is legally and technically ready, be voted this week. This request and a possible roll call vote today is not about the merits of PNR; those have been debated. Today is simply about giving this House its right to vote without an undue delay. Some in this House talk a lot about democracy and transparency, but at the end of the day this Parliament loses credibility with the backroom deals of a few who try to manipulate our agenda to further their own political aims and priorities. The public loses faith in politics because of games, tactics and vested interests. We are a democracy; if you do not like something you vote against it and then you justify that to your electorate. You do not delay or stop it from being voted at all.
My request is simple: please give me my right as rapporteur and elected Member, representing my constituents, to have a vote on this directive this week. I agree with the proposal that there should be a debate at 8.30 tomorrow morning and a vote later this week. That is my proposition."@en1
