"I voted in favour of this resolution and I believe that it represents a clear humanitarian appeal to end the bloodshed in Yemen, and call on Saudi Arabia to pursue a political solution rather than resorting to violence.
The amount of deaths in Yemen should not be ignored and I welcome the European Parliament vote today, which represents a serious take on the allegations of breaches of international humanitarian law by Saudi Arabia in Yemen. So serious, I would argue, that selling arms to the regime is something that would constitute a breach of the EU’s own legally-agreed Code of Conduct.
However, we would like to see Saudi Arabia as a partner and help international efforts to solve the conflicts in Yemen, Syria and elsewhere, but the EU has a legal and moral duty and as long as Saudi Arabia continues to have this level of disregard for the Yemeni people, it should not receive our support.
I am extremely concerned that David Cameron, around the time of this vote, boasted about the trade deal that he has made with the regime, by exporting more arms to the Saudi Government."@en1
