"Firstly, I note that this is an ‘own-initiative’ report and therefore has very little, if any, actual impact upon the humanitarian situation in Yemen. The proposals contained in the report have no legal force whatsoever.
I agree with much of the text of this resolution. I am indeed concerned by the ongoing military and humanitarian situation in Yemen. I am concerned about Western – and indeed British – arms exports to Saudi Arabia. However, at the same time I note that this report calls for action to be taken at EU level.
This would be a considerable precedent to be set in terms of taking power away from the UK to make our own decisions, both on defence and trade. I do not believe in this principle.
However, I do have significant concerns about our own role in the United Kingdom and believe that it should be addressed by the British Parliament.
On balance I felt it appropriate to abstain."@en1
