"I supported the resolution on the opening of free trade agreement negotiations with Australia and New Zealand. Both are close political and trading partners of the EU and the opening of negotiations for two separate FTAs has the potential for economic growth and investment for all involved, but this must be done without lowering any consumer, environmental or social and labour protection levels.
In the resolution we call on the Commission to study all additional market access opportunities for European economic operators, especially SMEs, offered by the possible FTAs and to weigh these against any possible defensive interests, given that both Australia and New Zealand have already comparatively open markets and very low tariffs. I also supported amendments to closely monitor certain agriculture sectors such as the dairy and meat sectors and where appropriate exclude them from the negotiations and to maintain high animal welfare standards. Ultimately the Parliament will have the final say on any agreed FTAs and the above issues will be crucial to achieving agreement."@en1
