"I voted against this resolution on opening free trade agreement negotiations with Australia and New Zealand.
While fair trade that benefits all parties is something I am in favour of in general, the radical eradication of any trade barriers for the sake of it is not necessarily in the interest of the people. In this instance the move to open FTA negotiations is motivated by the conclusion of the TPP and a fear of the EU being cut out of the Asia-Pacific region.
There are particular sensitivities to take into account when opening negotiations with countries such as Australia and New Zealand, the latter being known for its large agricultural and dairy outputs. The seasonal nature of trade patterns with these countries also mean that the abolition of trade barriers, tariff and non-tariff will cause market changes.
Finally this agreement again includes the EU’s proposed ‘Investment Court’ which I have completely opposed in TTIP. For these reasons I voted against the resolution."@en1
