"I voted against this report. Aside from some worrisome elements within the text, I also strongly object to the manner in which this text came to be voted upon. Compromise amendments, which had included the input from all political parties, were discarded at the last minute in favour of ‘Alternative Compromises’ from a few select groupings.
Although there were some good elements in the report, which highlighted the detrimental and negative role the ECB played in Greece, I strongly object to the undemocratic architecture of the ECB as a whole and therefore these elements were not strong enough for me to endorse the entire text. It goes without saying that rather than developing further steps towards pooling sovereignty, there is a need to reject austerity policies, prioritise public investment, democratise the governance structure and to redefine the European Monetary Union.
In any event, the ECB is based on the idea of deepening the power of supranational bodies which will move the political power further away from the people. This is fundamentally undemocratic and an agenda which I strongly oppose."@en1
