"I voted against this report which forms part of a wider agenda to deepen Europe’s economic and monetary union (EMU). The overall aim is to bind Member States to economic and fiscal policies at an EU level. In effect, the report represents a well-coordinated effort to institutionalise austerity. Moreover, the report offers no way out of the prevailing austerity narrative. In fact, it proposes the intensification of austerity policies. The immediate priorities are on boosting competitiveness and structural convergence, imposing fiscal policies and gradually making the convergence process ever more binding and therefore impacting directly on Ireland’s ability to implement our own legislation. Although this report contained some elements which sought to give more involvement to national parliaments in the Semester process, Sinn Féin generally opposes the European Semester, which works to deny citizens real political choices when electing their governments. Since I also oppose the austerity agenda of the overall report, I voted against."@en1
