"Tunisia has been greatly affected by the Arab Spring and political instability of the surrounding regions. The country’s GDP has dropped significantly since 2011. Given the long history of cooperation and trade between Tunisia and the European Union, the Commission authorised the negotiation of a deep and comprehensive free trade agreement with Tunisia and sought an annual duty-free quota on Tunisian olive oil (Tunisia’s largest agricultural export). The measure may marginally interfere with olive oil production within the EU Member States, but can have a great impact on stability and security in the region. I believe that the implementation of such an agreement between the EU and Tunisia would boost trade links and mutual cooperation between the parties and for these reason I voted in favour of my colleague Marielle de Sarnez’ report and against the proposal to reject the Commission proposal."@en1
