"Madam President, let us be quite clear that in the United Kingdom the migration issue is not the refugee crisis – 96% of those who come to the UK are economic migrants, whether from the EU or from outside the EU. We now have a massive over-supply of unskilled labour in the United Kingdom. The Bank of England says that, for a 10% increase in immigration, in certain sectors wages are cut by an average of 1.88%. You can bet your bottom euro that it is worse in my constituency in the north-east of England, where we have the highest unemployment in the land.
So today’s vote for jobcentres to be forced to advertise across the European Union when there are vacancies for CV matching, etc, will only drive more people to the UK, when of course people are already driven to the UK because English is a global language. So we can forget the emergency brake, because in one fell swoop – in one vote – we have done more damage than that could possibly repair. Yet Labour seem perfectly content to vote in favour of this."@en1
