"Madam President, back in England there is a debate going on about our EU membership, where this relationship between unelected Commission and elected Parliament comes up time and again. So when the Commission ignores Parliament’s request for over two years, and when documents finally turn up just before a debate, this is yet another practical example of how real power actually still lies with the Commission – unelected – rather than Parliament.
So, what of cigarette smuggling? Well, first let us do no harm, let us note that the evidence on a link between plain packaging and smuggling is mixed and make sure that Member States can decide their own laws. While we are on public health, we should welcome, not condemn, moves from traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes, and I have a lot of concerns about the revised Tobacco Products Directive on that one, which is going to put people in my constituency out of work, which is going to increase the share of the market held by big tobacco, make it harder for people to quit smoking, and result in more deaths. There are a lot of things that I think really need to be looked at again."@en1
