"Madam President, I would like to thank Ms O’Reilly and our rapporteur. Our report emphasises the crucial role that the European Ombudsman plays in ensuring European democracy and her key mission to make the voices of citizens heard. In her renewed mandate, the Ombudsman has demonstrated a clear commitment to increasing transparency, protecting fundamental rights and taking action to the benefit of the general public. The Ombudsman’s investigations into the ongoing TTIP negotiations have helped us achieve a greater deal of transparency than ever before in EU trade policy. More documents have been published and greater access to documents granted. To secure a decent TTIP agreement, we need to demonstrate that cherished institutions, such as our NHS in the UK, are not under threat. Transparency is crucial to delivering public trust in our trade policy, and the UK Government could learn a great deal from your work, Ms O’Reilly, in releasing the legal advice that they undertook on the impact of TTIP on the NHS and releasing that information as soon as possible. Citizens’ concerns for the protection of the fundamental rights of refugees have been heard loud and clear by Parliament’s Committee on Petitions and by the European Ombudsman. I fully support the Ombudsman’s call to establish a complaints mechanism for refugees fleeing war, who deserve to have their fundamental rights respected and upheld by Frontex. Her actions to ensure that clinical reports on medicines by the European Medicines Agency are published not only shows a commitment to proactive transparency but is also securing another step towards making lifesaving drugs for diseases such as hepatitis C available at affordable prices for those who need them. I congratulate the European Ombudsman on her achievements so far and encourage her to continue pressing and pursuing her five-year plan and strategy towards 2019 for the benefit of all of us. We look forward to your continued work, and we look forward to working with you and your team."@en1
