"I would just like to say that in Britain we made tremendous mistakes back in the 1950s closing our railways – many of them small railways – because we thought cars were the future. I agree with you that trains are the future, but there is also an enormous problem in the UK: we want to spend an awful lot of money on HS2, which is a bullet train or whatever that goes from London up to Scotland. It is a good idea in many ways, but what we would rather have is a better railway system, rather than spending an absolute fortune on a railway system which does not help the average commuter.
Also, the fares on this proposed line will probably be astronomical, and the only people who will be able to afford to travel on it will be superannuated businessmen and Members of this honourable House. Nobody else will be able to afford to go on it. I would much rather see money spent on regional railways than on taking business from one place to another and leaving everything in the middle ignored. Do you agree with me on that, Madam?"@en1
