"Mr President, island communities in Europe play a unique and vital role, and it is imperative that we recognise and support them. On sustainable energy resources, island communities have huge potential. If Europe is to meet its sustainability targets, we must help our islands to harness this potential. Scottish islands, with the biggest coastal exposure to the Atlantic in the UK, have some of the best renewable energy opportunities in the world. On education: access, especially to further education and higher education, is vital. Scotland is lucky to be the home of our newest university, the University of the Highlands and Islands, which is leading in delivering education remotely, attracting huge global interest. This leads me to my final point on digital access: we debate in this Chamber about the importance of the digital single market. We must ensure that our island communities have access to superfast broadband, so that they too can enjoy this digital revolution that we are all enjoying at the moment. I am proud to represent and support the Scottish island communities."@en1
