"I voted for the resolution on the situation in Libya. Stabilising Libya is crucially important not just for its people but in the wider context of the refugee/migrant crisis. With the dispute between the House of Representatives and the new General National Congress continuing the atmosphere of political instability, Daesh have taken advantage of this power vacuum. Libya has become home to the largest Daesh forces outside of the Middle East, which poses a significant threat to European security. While expanding its territory Daesh has launched a local campaign of terror – with beheadings, shootings and bombings. The human rights situation has deteriorated, with Libya a transit ground for human and weapons trafficking. It is essential that stability is brought to Libya and the wider region to stem the flow of desperate refugees and migrants risking their lives with smugglers and that we unite to fight Daesh. Regrettably the UN-backed unity government proposal was rejected by the HoR. However, they have signed the Libyan Political Agreement, the key aim of which is to establish a consensual government. The EU has made available a EUR 100 million package and is ready to offer immediate support to the new Libyan Government of National Accord once formed."@en1
