"The 2015 progress report rightly reflects the fact that Serbia has made significant strides on reforms to fight corruption and strengthen the rule of law. These efforts should be recognised and welcomed. However, there is still more work to be done to protect the independence and integrity of the judicial system and access to justice, and exercise of freedom of expression. And, as the report highlights, Serbia also needs to focus on other concerns and sectors, for example the education system, promoting work and training for young people, respecting the rights of workers, development of the public transport system, and respecting its environmental and energy commitments. As a Socialist member of our Serbia Committee, I would have preferred that the report emphasise further that the social dimension of EU accession must be addressed. Employment, labour and trade union rights still remain limited. It is also clear that social dialogue in Serbia remains weak and the consultation of social partners irregular. Agency and other less secure workers are not adequately protected. Furthermore, restructuring and privatisation should not be regarded as goals for their own sake. Many Serbians rely on public sector jobs and negative employment effects must be avoided where possible."@en1
