"The EU has been instrumental in promoting gender equality. However, we cannot afford to be complacent. Across Europe, progress on gender equality has stalled in recent years and in many areas we have gone backwards. Gender equality is not only an end in itself but a key component in promoting fair and sustainable economic growth. In order to be effective, and to avoid fragmentation, our approach must take the form of a comprehensive and official action plan which addresses every dimension of inequality and proposes clear outputs. The Staff Working Document published by the Commission at the end of last year simply will not cut it.
I, alongside my Labour colleagues, have made our position clear in a resolution adopted by this Parliament last year: we need a clear, comprehensive and achievable strategy for women’s rights and gender equality. The December EPSCO Council agreed that this should take the form of a Commission Communication, and the Commission’s own consultation showed overwhelming public support for a new strategy. The Commission should now adopt an official 2016 -2020 strategy and focus on delivering concrete action."@en1
