"The current strategy for equality amongst women and men ended in 2015. On 9 June 2015 the Parliament made a resolution urging the Commission to present a new Strategy for Gender Equality and Women’s Rights within the EU. Gender equality is a core value of the Member States and is crucial to achieving the overall aims of employment, growth and social inclusion. The employment rate in the Member States is still higher for men (70.1%) than among women (59.6%). The Commission’s previous strategy for equality 2010-2015 did not adequately advance equality at European and international level. The post-2015 strategy is necessary to deliver new momentum and concrete action to further women’s rights and achieve gender equality.
While useful, the staff working document since produced by the Commission for gender equality policy post-2015 does not have interinstitutional value. Member States must mobilise themselves to address equality issues and take action against gender-related violence. Equal opportunities in employment, education and health should be made a priority in Member States. Member States are encouraged to take responsibility in transposing, implementing and evaluating existing legislation and policy tools for equal opportunities at national level. The Commission should adopt an official strategy on gender equality without delay."@en1
