"Madam President, last but, hopefully, not least. Equality between men and women is a core value of the European Union and, while the Member States, including Ireland, have taken important steps to promote equality between women and men, there has been a slowdown in political action and reform at EU level over the last decade. In Ireland, despite some progress in this area, today’s statistical overview underlines considerable differences in the sectors in which men and women participate and the under-representation of women at senior levels – even in sectors which employ significantly higher numbers of women. This is not good enough. Therefore I welcome this new strategy, which calls on the Member States to take further steps to address equality issues and ensure equal opportunity in the fields of employment, health and education, and in both the public and private sectors. Finally, we are calling an election in Ireland right now; thankfully, 30% of the candidates from the political parties have to be females: a step in the right direction."@en1
