"I oppose the objection resolution to the authorisation of soybean MON 87708 x MON 89788. I believe that it is absolutely vital for public confidence that in Europe we have a GM regulation system that is underpinned by science. This means that products passing a robust, independent safety assessment should have fair market access. The European Food safety agency has declared this GM trait safe for food and feed use, and we should respect that decision made by experts, otherwise we risk undermining not only our own credibility but also the principle of science-based decision-making. The use of GM material in animal feed is significant across the EU, and our livestock sector is heavily dependent on imported GM feed materials, so it is important that EU GM authorisations proceed as rapidly as possible to keep pace with authorisations in other parts of the world and avoid significant disruption in the international trade of agricultural commodities, which could have a negative impact on food prices."@en1
