"I welcome the Commission's target to halt loss of biodiversity by 2020. Biodiversity is critical to both our environmental and economic well-being. With only one out of the six specific targets on track to be achieved, the disappointing reality is that we are a long way off from achieving the Commission's goals.
The report calls for more ambitious means to achieve such vital targets. It calls for better implementation and further enforcement of existing polices such as the Nature Directives. Strengthening the existing mechanism will enable a more cohesive measurement of the economic value biodiversity can offer.
I acknowledge agriculture has an inherent role to play in conserving biodiversity. Yet we must be cautious to ensure that the targets set out establish a complementary relationship between biodiversity and agriculture rather than a conflicting one."@en1
