"Mr President, as a Labour MEP I am committed to protecting the EU Nature Directives and will work to ensure that the fitness check is not used as an excuse to water down or weaken legislation. It is imperative that the idea of reducing red tape is not used to mask the cutting of vital environmental protection. The Birds Directive and the Habitat Directive are pieces of legislation which EU citizens care deeply about. As part of the fitness check, a public consultation on the benefits of the directives was launched and over 100 000 citizens from the UK alone spoke up in favour of environmental laws stemming from European cooperation.
In Scotland the effect of these laws can be seen clearly by the designation of Natura sites, and these sites help to conserve and protect Scotland’s native wildlife, as well as migratory birds which visit from other Member States. There are an incredible 293 Special Areas of Conservation, and with regard to birds there are 153 Special Areas of Protection. The Habitats and Birds Directives have a large and visible impact in securing biodiversity in Scotland. I therefore support proposals to ensure that the legislation is being implemented correctly and as effectively as possible."@en1
