"Mr President, we are facing an historic moment when it comes to our tax system. Either we take the bull by its horns, or we continue with the system established in 1928 that fails to reflect the globalised and digital world we live in. We need to have a level playing field for European tech companies to grow, to become global leaders. The EU has to lead the action on tax evasion. The absence of the Dutch Presidency is most disappointing, given that it is the Member States which hold the blame for this. Commissioner, I welcome your proposals. They underscore the need to share tax information across EU countries, making it harder for multinationals to shift profits to low tax jurisdictions or to avoid paying tax completely anywhere in the European Union. We do have to face the fact that it is the legislative framework that allows multinationals to circumvent paying tax legally. So we have to close the loopholes and ensure that it is implemented consistently across the EU, and having an agreed list of tax havens is a significant step forward in the fight against tax avoidance. The Times yesterday reported that sweetheart deals like the one for Google are not unusual in the UK for the FTSE 100 largest companies: BP, Royal Dutch Shell and AstraZeneca all failed to pay any corporation tax in the UK in 2014. They have not broken any law, but we need to change this, and we need to do it soon for justice for all our citizens."@en1
