"Madam President, the North Sea has the potential to become a central plank of the EU’s Energy Union: a real northern powerhouse. Offshore wind and other renewables, better interconnection through a meshed electricity grid, and joint research cooperation around the North Sea could help ensure low-cost, secure and clean energy, while creating and maintaining thousands of high-quality jobs – including in my constituency in the North-East of England.
The Dutch Presidency of the Council is an excellent opportunity to turn this potential into reality. Last month, colleagues from five political groupings and I presented the Dutch Minister for the Economy with an action plan for energy for the North Sea. That is ahead of a high-level meeting that is happening this Thursday, and I would like to call on them to take this opportunity to make the North Sea a clean powerhouse for Europe."@en1
