"Madam President, one hundred years ago the Irish Republic was declared. As a nation, we should be celebrating our centenary and celebrating the brave men and women who fought for Irish freedom, but instead, the Irish Government, whose Fine Gael members sit across this Chamber, would like to see our history erased – not just figuratively, but literally. They want to demolish the site where the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising spent their last hours before their execution. They want to demolish a site that the National Museum of Ireland has declared is the most important historic site in modern Irish history. They want to demolish the site that the Imperial War Museum in London has declared as the most intact city battlefield in the whole of Europe. They want to deny the future generations of Ireland in Europe their historical heritage and instead replace it with a shopping centre, like some sort of crass, shining beacon to their neo-liberal agenda. I want to put it on this Parliament’s record that this will not be tolerated. Our heritage belongs to everyone, and tomorrow I take the fight to the Council of Europe."@en1
