"Madam President, we in UKIP believe in the importance of preserving nature reserves and natural habitats for wildlife in Britain and Europe. In fact, I belong to the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, which has preserved beautiful tracts of the county. Consequently we are willing to support the improvement of existing legislation on this issue. However, we believe that this task should be a national responsibility, and we therefore oppose new EU legislation in this area. The best people to decide on natural habitats in Britain are the British. We do not trust the unelected European Commission to decide on the protection of the environment and animal welfare. As for climate change, I would suggest that currently in the UK, the greatest risk to wildlife is the unprecedented demand for housing as a direct result of population growth and migration into the UK, which is seeing our beautiful green and pleasant land rapidly disappearing under tarmac and concrete."@en1
