"Madam President, biodiversity across Europe is in crisis and the European Commission’s own mid-term review admits it. No significant progress has been made on halting the degradation of our ecosystems and biodiversity loss. Pitifully, only one out of the six headline targets has shown any progress. I have listened to Commissioner Vella tonight and I have not heard him categorically rule out a revision of the nature directives. The nature directives have been shown to have tangible benefits in the protection of wildlife and ecological habitats, and I am extremely pleased that in this report we have clearly outlined that we object to any possible revision of these directives. We know it is the implementation and enforcement that remains the problem – not the legislation itself – so the European Parliament tomorrow is due to add its voice to the half-a-million citizens who responded loud and clear to the public consultation to protect these laws. The question is, Commissioner Vella: are you listening?"@en1
