"Mr President, China should not be awarded market economy status at this time. In China, resources are not allocated by the market; prices are not freely determined by the market; major industry sectors are subject to centrally-imposed five-year plans. Market economy status would make it more difficult to act against the steel dumping which has done so much damage in Britain and across Europe.
But I see parallels here with the EU’s intrusive and distorting energy policy. Here in the EU, resources are not allocated by the market. Prices are distorted by subsidies and by the EU’s emissions trading scheme. The whole industry is dominated by central planning from Brussels. So perhaps we should not be debating China. Perhaps we should be debating whether the EU itself deserves market economy status."@en1
