"Mr President, I represent the West Midlands, which is the only UK region with a trade surplus with China, worth GBP 3 billion last year. Free trade is vital for us and is vital for Europe as a whole. Now, do trade subsidies exist in China? Yes. Does the Government play too big a role in the economy? Yes. But how do we change this? By tying China into the global trading system and by treating them like everyone else.
If we go all protectionist and reject this status, they will not reform and they will retaliate. This will hurt our export industries and cost us jobs. China opted to join the WTO; they opted to play by our rules. This was a huge success for the West, and we need to build on it, but we also need to meet our own obligations. Market economy status does not stop us imposing anti-dumping measures; we just have to use the WTO parameters. We should approve it, and then we should move forward with the investment agreement. After that, in the long run, we should look at a Free Trade Agreement with China. This is how we deal with China: bind her into the global trading system. But in order to do that, we also need to trust in free trade and in the WTO ourselves."@en1
