"Mr President, in my constituency, trade and services is incredibly important to business. The UK is the largest exporter of services to the world, even bigger than the USA. That is not just a fact, that is a government statistic – for those who appreciate the irony of that. So I want to make sure that British interests and North-East interests are protected. Why? Because that sector employs over 45 000 people in my constituency and over 12 000 in Newcastle alone.
But, as ever, this report has its wrinkles. It is advisory only. If we adopt it in full it will not remove a single stroke of the pen from TiSA itself. It also recognises that TiSA will involve movement of natural persons between countries that are parties to the agreement. Does that mean even more massive migration to the UK, and if so, how much?
It correctly identifies the threat of a ratchet clause which would put the rights of investors over a democratically-elected government. Long story short: we need to protect the UK’s status as a world leader and I am growing increasingly concerned that TiSA will not do that."@en1
