"Madam President, the EU now has the opportunity over the coming years to negotiate a modern, 21st-century trade agreement with like-minded partners: Australia and New Zealand. These are two Commonwealth countries with which we share similar values, levels of development and historical and cultural ties.
They are also committed to the multilateral agenda at the WTO. At the same time, Australia and New Zealand hold equal ambitions for opening new trading markets at bilateral level, offering the EU the chance to strengthen Asia—Pacific relations. As we have heard in public meetings, they are approaching these talks with a blank canvas in areas ranging from geographical indications to investment protection. We have a real opportunity, therefore, to negotiate an ambitious new model for a trade deal that is bold enough to tackle modern day issues – issues such as the digital economy, e-commerce and rules of origin, and of course, a dedicated chapter for SMEs, for which trade agreements provide the most benefits. I would therefore be supporting these negotiations through the scoping exercises, and I hope that we can quickly conclude a successful agreement."@en1
