"Turkey is a potential EU member, a member of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership and an important trade partner of the EU. More recently, Turkey has undertaken to play a key role in supporting the EU’s efforts to manage the refugee crisis and received EUR 3 billion aid package. The EU has very close ties with Turkey, but our cooperation and friendship shouldn’t stop us from openly criticising our partners when such criticism is due. Turkey has launched a high-risk offensive against the PKK. The scale of the military operations being carried out in towns and cities by police and military units is truly shocking. In southeast Turkey, civilians have been killed and several towns have been put under curfew for weeks on end. I’ve met with Ms Figen Yuksekdag, co-chair of the HDP, and I was deeply concerned with her account of the events in Turkey, including violent crackdowns on protests and rapidly shrinking space for political opposition. As Turkey’s partner, the EU must support the peace process and call on both parties of the conflict to agree on an immediate ceasefire, end and denounce all violent acts and start negotiating in good faith for the end of hostilities."@en1
