"I voted against the resolution objecting to the decision to grant GSP+ status to Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan’s application gives an encouraging sign of the progress the country is making and by engaging in GSP+, we can push for further progress by the Kyrgyzstani Government. As one of the poorest countries in the region the government faces significant challenges while at the same time trying to introduce reforms and GSP+ status can go towards helping combating this widespread poverty through investment and reform. Regarding the draft law on sexual orientation, this of course is a matter of concern but the key point is that it remains a draft at the moment and it would be disproportionate to base a criterion for a serious failure on a law which does not exist. I believe that it will be through the granting of GSP+ that we can better monitor and address the issue and hopefully prevent its adoption as part of GSP+ dialogue."@en1
