"This was a bizarre report, written by a British Conservative MEP, yet opposed by Her Majesty’s Conservative Government. It rather implies that the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. On the subject of hands, the inclusion of items such as oven gloves and umbrellas in ‘personal protective equipment’ is rather stretching a point.
I find little to add to the comments of Her Majesty’s Government, which notes that the inclusion of such items ‘breaches the principle of proportionality’. Indeed, I see no reason why the UK government should not have the competence to deal with such matters as oven gloves and umbrellas instead. It was therefore entirely consistent with my principles to vote against."@en1
