"This draft directive is part of a package of proposals to further strengthen procedural rights for citizens in criminal proceedings, which includes one on safeguards for children, and another on legal aid. Labour MEPs support the idea of establishing minimum standards across the EU in areas as fundamental as the presumption of innocence. The report outlines effective procedural safeguards in criminal proceedings at EU level which will strengthen an individual’s right to a fair trial. Along with Ireland and Denmark, the UK will not opt in to this Directive so there is no conflict between national constitutional rules and secondary EU law."@en1
