"The presumption of innocence is a fundamental principle of the legal process and one of the most important rights of the defence and according to the directive, Member States have to ensure that accused persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty under the law. The proposals in the text are very reasonable. They include banning public authorities from providing information to the media if it would demerit the principle of the presumption of innocence, prohibiting authorities from using force to obtain information from an accused person and placing very strict limitations in cases when a judgement may go ahead in the absence of the accused. All of the these are crucial to ensure that we have a just and fair criminal system and that criminal proceedings are done in the most transparent way."@en1
