"Mr President, the Dutch Prime Minister takes over the Presidency of the European Union at a time when more and more citizens feel a disenchantment with the actions of the European elite and indeed the increasing drive of these institutions to interfere in the decisions of sovereign governments, as seen in this house both yesterday and today. In the United Kingdom we await with interest the outcome of our Prime Minister’s renegotiation – a renegotiation much flaunted by him, but underwhelming to most of us. At the core of the EU’s problems is that European leaders are selling their people short, ignoring the need for substantial and radical reform. Mr Rutte, you listed the problems and many had hoped to see a greater willingness to face these concerns head-on under the Dutch Presidency. In a poll published last weekend in the United Kingdom the ‘leave’ campaign was six points ahead. The wave of euroscepticism that abounds – not just in the United Kingdom, but in many other Member States – cannot be ignored forever. In the United Kingdom we look forward to the next six months, not just because of the Dutch Presidency but because of the opportunity for real democratic accountability."@en1
