"Madam President, the presumption of innocence before being found guilty is a fundamental pillar of democracy, and it’s good that we emphasise that here this evening, but it isn’t often observed in every case. Sometimes it can be difficult to observe. Particularly, for instance, over the last few years, because of the economic recession, certain people became very unpopular: people like developers, bankers, and indeed politicians when they were accused of crimes and these became high profile in the media for their alleged crime. But they were often presumed to be guilty before the actual trial, and they and their families often suffered far more from the opprobrium, the angst and being ostracised as a result of it than they would from the penalty of a set amount of time in prison if they were found guilty. We definitely need to try and underpin these two basic principles as much as we can."@en1
